SIGSIG, AN OPEN DOOR TO THE WORLD
The name Sigsig suffered various changes through the pass of time, being called Siksik, Sicsic until finally it took its actual name Sigsig.
LOCALIZATION AND BORDERS
Sigsig is one of 13 counties in the province of Azuay, being located in the southeast of the capital city of Cuenca. It is about 60 km taking the Cuenca- Gualaceo- Sigsig road or 48 km by the Cuenca- El Valle - Sigsig road.
Bordering in the North are the counties of Chordeleg and Gualaceo. Southwards is the county of Gualaquiza in the Morona-Santiago province, eastwards the county of Limon of the same province and to the west is the county of Cuenca, Azuay province.
Altitude is 2498 m about sea level, with an average temperature of 15 degree Celsius. The 2001 census showed 24635 citizens, 10914 men and 13721 women.
THE COUNTY OF SIGSIG
Corn dominates the agricultural structure of Sigsig. Next to that the production of fruits and garden products offer a rich variation in quality and quantity.
Principal task of the women is the weaving of "panama" hats but too she burdens all domestic task and often the maintenance of the household.
The central area of Sigsig shows an irregular topography characterized by the existence of different terraces of the central mountain range of the Andes. It is divided in 4 zones perfectly to distinguish.
July 29 of 2002 the Ecuadorian
national Institute of cultural preservation declared
the center of the town of Sigsig and its buildings
and urban spaces cultural heritage of the state
of Ecuador.
SIGSIG, AN ARCHEOLOGICAL TREASURE
CHOBSHI AND SHABALULA
In Sigsig we find monuments and archeological traces nearby of the famous Chobshi cave. They are considered Cañari-inca. The first is called too Ingapirca de Chobshi known as resting place for the Inca troops.
Shabalula is one and a half km southwards away from Chobshi and is considered as a camp, observation point, fortress or ritual center.

THE LEGENDS,
passed with all its details and cultural singularities from generation to generation are forming a pattern of cultural identity. Some are:
San Sebastián,
Saint chosen by god to impose justice for the inhuman way the Spaniards behaved towards our Indians during the exploitation of gold now admired by the whole town, being the "escaramuza" the maximum expression of the relationship being confirmed year by year. It was the Saint himself who chose the place where his church was to be built. So he gave the origin of the town called San Sebastian de Sigsig of which he is the Saint.
Ayllón,
the enchanted lake where the mythology of the Cañari Indians say that her offspring is, a giant snake, Shinshin, took a pleasant rest.
Fasayñán,
a majestic mountain, is home of many versions related to the Guacamayas as it was chosen by the brothers Ataorupaqui and Cusicayo during the universal deluge which led to the origin of the tribe of the Cañari who dispersed through the province of Cañaribamba.

FESTIVALS OF SIGSIG
The town of Sigsig is known as a town which likes to celebrate, showing by this its spirit, joy, creativity and folk customs. Among the most important are the celebration of the local Saint, San Sebastian, taking place the 20 of January, where the show the famous "escaranuza" (skirmish), with the participation of 120 horsemen. The celebration of San Marcos 825 th of April, the celebration of "maria Auxiliadora" at the 24 of May and celebration of Christmas. Other events are the declaration of Sigsig as county the 16 of April, the Carnaval games at the shores of the Santa Barbara river and the declaration of Sigsig as National heritage at the 25 of October.
RELIGIOUS LIFE
Most of the habitants are catholic and there belief is profound. The church is the center of many social and cultural activities being sure that the glory of God can only be achieved by providing dignity to the people on earth.
TYPICAL FOOD
Sigsig has a rich gastronomic tradition, being the Cuy (guinea pig), the Mote (corn) prepared in many ways and meat among the most popular. Too different kinds of Chichas are prepared. The apples and peaches are exquisite.
CLOTHING
Women wear her typical dresses, and all villages have its own colors. Skirts, the tie-dyed cloth are frequently used even in daily life.
TOURISM
Sigsig got a lot of interesting places like the arquelogical sites of Chobshi, Shabalula and other places in the paramos.
The beautiful landscape includes the mountain of Fasyñan, the hills of Huallil, and the lakes of Ayllon the shore of the Santa Barbara River and the lake of San Sebastian.
The handicraft are not only the weaving of the Panama hats but too the carving of religious images, embroidery and the guitars of San Bartholome.
HOW TO GET THERE
There are two roads from Cuenca, both paved. You may take a bus from the bus terminal in Cuenca every half an hour leaving the first at 5: 30. Too there is a new road to the Amazon running buses from Gualaquiza 4 times a day. Once in Sigsig you may walk or hire a cab for getting to the villages.
